SOLDIER! PRAY
By Margarita J. Canedo.

Soldier! sleep:
Distant eyes for thee now weep,
Faithful hearts fond vigils keep;
Oft-times till the dawn of day
Loving lips for thee do pray.

Soldier! sleep.
Slumber on:
Thou thy duty well hast done,
And thy meed of rest hast won;
Others now thy watch have taken.
Till the morning bids thee waken;
Slumber on.

Yet to God
Ere thou closest weary eyes,
Let thy heart a moment rise.
Thank His kind protecting care,
That thou liv'st to breathe a prayer
To a Father's list'ning ear;
Then repose.

When the morn
Robed in rosy light is born,
At the echoing bugle-horn
Thou refreshed wilt spring from rest,
Life all bounding in thy breast,
With the dawn.

Then once more,
Patriot soldier! Oh! before
War's dread thunders round thee roar
Yet once more, brave soldier, pray
God to shield thee mid the fray
Of the impending battle day;
Soldier! pray.

Ere this day
Ends, a slumber thou may'st take,
No reveille e'er can break.
Would'st thou from that final rest
Wake to be forever blest?
Soldier! pray.
