Full Text

From the Federal Republican—Jan. 17.

G. W. Campbell has declared in the Senate, says the reporter for that body, that "no man in his senses can believe there will be a peace with England this five years."

It has been over and over avowed in the house of Representatives, within a few days, that there could be no peace until Canada was taken, that Canada must be taken some time or other, and the sooner the better.—If necessary to effect this object, it has been also avowed, that a conscription would be resorted to.

We stand almost alone in our opinion, but we have not a doubt, unless Bonaparte gets up again, a treaty will be signed before July, disgraceful to administration, but highly beneficial to the country. This is to be accounted for by the fact. that the interest and character of the cabinet, are in direct opposition to the interest and honor of the nation. By accepting the proposition to treat at Gottenburg. upon the basis presented by England, as we said the day the President's communication of Lord Castlereagh's despatch was made to Congress, Mr. Madison struck his colors. The terms of capitulation remains only to be signed, unless our ally in the meantime can come to our relief. This is the fortune of war.

It has been the fate of thousands before this government, who have been obliged to graduate their terms of accommodation, by the good or ill success of their arms.
