NEW YORK, Sept. 12.-Russian troops. driven east of the Dnieper in the first smashing offensive of the Germans in the Ukraine, have recrossed the river at four points and are attacking a retreating Nazi army, Moscow claimed today.
The Russian victory claims came as reports reached London that the Reds have staged a powerful attack on the Nazis near Leningrad and have fought their way into the Smolensk region on the central front.
Berlin, unofficially admitting the strength of the continuing Russian attacks, declared the high command is holding up reports on actual operations in order to prevent valuable information from reaching the Russians.
Moscow told of a heavy aerial attack on an unnamed German-held port and airdrome near Leningrad, through which, it is understood, the Nazis have been gathering materials for the attack on the old czarist capital.
The Reds said they destroyed 22 German planes on the ground in the attack.
Royal Air Force bombers, meanwhile, were smashing at another unnamed German port, presumably on the Baltic, and at the great submarine base at Kiel.
