Burr Meeting.
The Little band held a meeting last night at the Mechanic Hall. There were assembled not more than thirty persons. Of these, four were Captains of Albany troops. There was also, it is said and believed, included in that number, a person from Harlem. Our friend in that quarter will be able to ascertain his name. This assemblage of persons residing so far from the City shows that the faction have been recruiting, but that with all their trouble and pains could not muster more than thirty Citizens! This number of corrupt or deluded men, it may be said, small as it is, is sufficient for one State.
The object of the meeting was to nominate Aaron Burr as Governor of this State at the ensuing election, in opposition to Chancellor Lansing, Unanimously nominated at Albany by the Representatives of the people. After this open this audacious nomination, the faction will, as they ought to, be viewed as enemies. Our Representatives from all the Counties of the State, collected together at Albany, have unanimously nominated Chancellor Lansing. Is not this nomination a full and free expression of the public sentiment? Undoubtedly. What then is the Burr meeting of last night? A faction, met in secret to plot, to engender mischief; to divide our citizens, to injure our cause. They have now drawn the line of demarkation. They cannot any longer deceive by hollow professions. It is repeated, that after this they ought to be treated as Enemies.
Small, however, as was their number, the faction, had a deadly faction, within its own little self. They disagreed: there were different opinions: various views were made manifest. I am not sure that they ultimately agreed on any one point. There was much confusion, although none but pure Burrites were previously made acquainted with the meeting.
N. B. There were eight tide-waiters present, all, of course, custom house officers!
