"Help me, Cassius, or I sink."

The following significant item is from the last Steubenville Herald.

"The New Bank--The stock is not yet taken, nor the half of it. What are our country friends about? Have they no money, or are they scared by the lokies?"

So much for that. We have made special inquiry, and we have not been able to learn any thing definite in regard to the progress of the Bank of Cadiz; but we rather guess, as the yankees say, that it is an up hill business. Appeal after appeal has been made through the federal prints, to induce the farmers of Harrison county to take stock: and then, again, with big tears in their eyes, they have called upon their "loco foco friends" to help them out of the swamp! "Help me, Cassius, or I sink!" We are forced to the conclusion, therefore, that at present the prospects of a paper factory either in Jefferson or Harrison county, are not very flattering. The last Republican has the following:

"A friend in Jefferson county suggested to us a few days since, the propriety of the counties of Jefferson and Harrison uniting their capital, and establishing a Bank in either of the counties, at the earliest possible period--the bank to be located in the town of Cadiz or Steubenville, and that the county where such Bank may be located, shall be bound to subscribe the same amount so furnished, in case the other may purpose establishing a bank within her borders at some future period. There must be something done-the lokie editors, with empty pockets, and no credit, are crying out lustily for banks! Are the lokie editors to be provided for or not-- what has our old friend of the Steubenville Her. ald to say?"

There now!--can Jefferson county pass that appeal over in silence and with indifference?

"THERE MUST BE SOMETHING DONE!"

Of course there must. The long "dry spell" this spring has doubtless been owing to the absence of a bank. Let not Jefferson and Harrison counties give up in despair. Let our "old friend of the Steubenville Herald" and the two bank editors of this place make one more desperate appeal to the "loco focos" to take stock. (By the way, that's not a bad idea--there ought to be a few "loco foco" stockholders in the partnership bank--they will watch the whigs and see that every thing is conducted honestly-the whigs need watching!) The bank that is to be may be located at Peoria or Bloomfield, or any other half way place, and by a little extra exertion, may be put into operation before the legislature meets; for after that time the democratic majority may draw black lines across the iniquitous page where the "checker-board monster is recorded.

The Postmaster at La Grange writes us that the Sentinel, "directed to William J. Thompson is not lifted--he says he never subscribed to said paper." Now, we can inform the Postmaster that Mr. Thompson did personally subscribe for the Sentinel here at Cadiz, and at his request we directed it to him at Buffalo, Washington co., Pa. After he left Buffalo, he was in Cadiz, and personally as well as by note, requested us to continue sending him the paper, and to direct it to La Grange. We have done so, and intend doing so, until it is paid for---then we will stop it, if Mr. T. desires-not before. He subscribed at No. 30, vol. 11, and now owes us $1.28.
