"One smoke, all's well."
That was the signal flashed to the plane Northbird last week by Wendall Dawson and a companion who are prospecting on the Le Duc river in the Ketchikan vicinity, says the Chronicle.
The plane dropped two bags of food and mail and returned to Ketchikan.
It had been agreed in advance that "one fire or smoke" would mean "all's well," and "three smokes" would mean trouble.
J. V. Hickey, owner and agent of the Ketchikan Airways corporation, accompanied Ray Howard on the plane trip. Two bags of food were arranged with an automatic release, the same as had been provided for a previous trip.
When the plane first arrived there was no sign of smoke. The plane then circled over the vicinity where it was thought the camp should be and soon a small haze appeared and almost at once a regular smudge smoke.
As the two bags were released near the smoke the men in the plane could see one of the men on the ground. The plane circled as close to the ground as possible and Mr. Hickey shouted at the man, whom he took to be Mr. Dawson, and the latter waved his hands.
