Full Text

The National Intelligencer of the 28th inst. contains a long and carefully written article, on the subject of the next Presidency, under the signature of "Massachusetts," which, from its internal character, and other circumstances, we are authorised to regard as an official manifesto of the friends of Daniel Webster. The authors of this paper have taken great umbrage at the nomination of Gen. Harrison by the State Conventions of Maryland and Pennsylvania, and are at no pains to conceal their mortification and chagrin. They, however, assert, that they will not haul down their flag. They have certainly a right to keep it flying, however discouraging may be the prospects of their leader—but it seems to us that sound policy as well as good sense should induce them to yield to public opinion, which is every where, beyond the immediate influence of Mr. Webster's local popularity, emphatically adverse to his pretensions.
