Invited As 10th Unit Nelson County Decides Against Affiliation With TB Association

An invitation which would have made Nelson county the 10th county in the Southside Tuberculosis Association has been turned down by leaders in the tuberculosis control field in that county.

The decision to reorganize a local tuberculosis unit rather than affiliate with the regional association headquartered at Farmville was made last week following conferences with leaders on both sides.

The Southside Association board of directors voted in May to issue the invitation to Nelson county, which has a considerable problem with the disease.

Views Exchanged

Meeting with Nelson leaders Tuesday at Lovingston were T. B. Hall, president of the Southside Association, Mrs. Emma Anthony, executive secretary, and Mrs. Catherine Zaharov, director of local program development for the Virginia Tuberculosis Association.

Judge John W. Wheeler, a leader in the fight on tuberculosis in Nelson county for many years, presided at the joint session. About 25 persons attended.

The services available through the Association were outlined, and Nelson county's needs were presented in the exchange of views on both sides.

More Direct

The final decision by the Nelson group was to reorganize as a local county unit, with direct affiliation with the Virginia Association. They felt that would provide more immediate and direct action.

The Southside Association could not have begun services there until after joint cooperation in the 1961 Christmas Seal Sale had provided additional funds for expanding the work to 10

Present county affiliates with the Southside Association are Amelia, Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Powhatan and Prince Edward.
