Fruits and Flowers.—The exhibition of fruits and flowers of the season, which took place at Mechanics Hall, last Saturday afternoon, was a very imposing affair, and drew together about a thousand spectators, who were delighted and surprised at the variety of excellent fruits and of beautiful flowers, which had been gathered from gardens in this city and vicinity, after a few days preparation for the show. It exceeded the most sanguine expectations of those who got up the novel exhibition, and was a gratifying sight to those who had attended the fairs of horticultural societies in other cities. This exhibition was first suggested by the horticultural department of the Franklin Society; and to their efforts, aided by those of other gentlemen who have turned their attention to the cultivation of fruits and flowers, are we indebted for this novel display, which we hope is the precursor of an annual fair that will bring in view the richest treasures of Pomona and Flora.

One good effect of this exhibition is already seen in the formation of a horticultural society, which has been promptly organised, and the members of which show a spirit which is a guaranty of its future usefulness. If a portion of this spirit and enthusiasm can be infused into our farmers and landholders, they will devote more attention to the culture of fruits, than they have hitherto done, and they will acquire a taste for ornamental gardening, so that in a few short years we shall witness the enclosure near every farm house filled with grape vines, fruit trees and flowering shrubs of every description, which, while they minister to the comfort of the owner and his family, will yield a revenue far beyond the expenses of their culture.
