Connecticut Election.

Connecticut is a hard nutmeg to grate. Some of the brassiest old Copperheads in America flourish within its borders. It is in the neighborhood of the city of New York, with her sixty thousand Democratic majority, and transportation is swift, easy, cheap and ample. The Democracy carried Connecticut yesterday, making a gain upon their majority last year. What explanations the New York Tribune and Springfield Republican may have to offer we shall see in due time. As the figures appear at a distance, they do not indicate that impeachment is a profusely popular proceeding. That the Republicans in Congress have been bold enough is not disputed. The defeat will have to be accounted for without charging it to the timid men of the party.

We suppose the Democratic success in Connecticut will revive their faith in the reaction, and check the tendency toward the nomination of Chase as the Conservative candidate upon the platform of the Constitution. There is just about enough encouragement for the Democracy in the Connecticut election, to insure the nomination by them of a thorough partisan for the Presidency. and to provide in the platform and the candidate all the conditions of defeat.
