GEORGIA TEMPERANCE SOCIETY. The third annual meeting of this Society was held April 17th. From the pamphlet published by the Society, we extract the following facts and observations:

During the past year, two persons were murdered at or in the neighborhood of a dram shop of liquor as well as their murderer.

A man was murdered between DeKalb and Macon last January; both the murdered and murderer were intoxicated.

In March, a man, who had been drinking for several days in Henry County, lay down near some log heaps on fire - his clothes caught and he was in the agonies of death when our informant left the County.

At a dram shop in Henry County, during a horse race, an intemperate man was thrown from his horse and killed instantly.

We shudder to continue the record of such facts; but we might fill sheets with them. We turn to a brighter page.

At the late review and inspection of a regiment in Jasper County, where there were more than 400 men on the ground, only two quarts and a few half pints were drank! The vender says that three years ago on such an occasion, he would have sold 30 or 40 gallons.

Col. Dawson's regiment in Green County, mustered on the 5th May, 1830, and not one drop of spirit was on the ground!

Members of the Legislature informed the Secretary that not one-fourth part of the spirit is now consumed at Milledgeville during the season as was formerly. In some rooms not a drop was drunk. Some persons in Liberty County have ceased to sell spirit!

A young man three or four months previous to his death, began begging his father, who was a notorious dram drinker, to pour out all the spirit in the house; he refused; the son told him he could not die satisfied till it was done. After days of importunity, he prevailed, and on the same day "fell asleep!" The father has not been intoxicated since.

In the societies here mentioned, there are about 2000 members, and it is confidently believed that 20,000 in the State, who were formerly in the habit of daily drinking spirit, now seldom if ever taste it.

Event Details

The third annual meeting of the Georgia Temperance Society reported facts from their pamphlet: alcohol-linked murders and accidents causing deaths; contrasted with reduced drinking at a Jasper County regiment review (only two quarts vs. former 30-40 gallons), zero spirit at Col. Dawson's Green County muster on May 5, 1830, less consumption at Milledgeville legislature, some Liberty County sellers ceasing, and a son's plea leading to father's sobriety; society has 2000 members, believed 20,000 statewide now abstaining.
