Full Text

From the Julian S. Miller column of the Charlotte Observer, we quote:

"Approximately one fifth of the American population, or 24,000,000 people, are living out of Uncle Sam's pocket.

Uncle Sam's is a composite pocket of all the people in the country.

Therefore, one-fifth of our population is being carried about by the other four-fifths.

That is manifestly hard on the bearers of this staggering burden, but even that is not the most unsatisfactory phase of the situation.

It's the unhealthiness of having a fifth of the people unable to go under their own steam.

There is something in that situation that deadens and paralyzes manhood and womanhood."

Approximately one fifth of the American population, or 24,000,000 people, are living out of Uncle Sam's pocket, a composite of all people's contributions, thus one-fifth carried by the other four-fifths, which burdens the bearers and unhealthily deadens and paralyzes manhood and womanhood.
