Brunswick, (Me.) Jan. 2.

Fire. On Thursday last the inhabitants of this village were alarmed by the appearance of fire from the store of Col. Jesse Pierce: but by the timely and spirited exertions of the Firewards, Engine-men, and other citizens, it was very fortunately arrested before it had made great progress. It originated, as we are informed, in consequence of wood being placed too near the stove pipe, near the place where it entered the chimney. We are happy to state, that but little damage was sustained. One circumstance, which occurred at this fire (though no blame attached to any one) is particularly worthy of notice, and should serve as a caution, both to store-keepers and firemen. We are informed that a keg of powder was taken out after the fire was subdued, the outside of which was considerably heated by the flames. We would put the question, whether, (unless a restriction against keeping powder only in certain designated places, or some other remedy be provided) our merchants will not be in want of assistance in cases of fire?--Herald.
