Full Text
A Philadelphia writer has ventured to attribute the violence of the British to the measures of our administration in not providing a navy. Why did he not attribute the sufferings of the Danes to the same cause? Why did he not attribute it to the senseless abuse which has been poured upon our administration because it did not rush into a war with France? Why were not the Spanish fleet secure, when Britain was negotiating with Spain? Why was not Turkey safe, when the British fleet carried proposals of peace during an expedition to Alexandria? Fleet or no fleet, more probable causes can be found for British outrage than any negotiations of the President, or any want of fleets, and armies. We are common sufferers with all nations. We must do all that our prudence, our courage, and our patriotism can do, but we must look to no fleet we can possess in this generation for protection, without an entire revolution in European affairs—Salem Reg.
