Full Text

The Editor of the 'Pitts' Observatory justly remarks on the absurdity of Federalists in lavishing praises on Elliot's discernment and integrity, and at the same time, pouring out the most violent abuse against the President. How does the case stand? Mr. Elliot, say his Federal panegyrists, has correct views of men and things, & his opinions & assertions are entitled to full credit and confidence. The President, says Mr Elliot, deserves every praise--is a man eminent for talents and patriotism, for distinguished and irreproachable, public and private virtue. The President, aver these champions of Elliot's sense and judgment, is corrupt and unprincipled--stained with every vice and meriting the most hearty execration. Now, if Mr. E. is right, the federalists are wrong. The federalists declare that Mr. E. is correct--and of course, that they themselves are either liars or dupes. Mr E is their own witness--they cannot except to his testimony--and the whole of that testimony is to be taken together.

Elliot, the trimming representative from Vermont, denies that he has changed, and accuses the majority of the republicans with changing. This is like the soldier, who, being reprimanded for being after the rest of the company, declared it was their fault for firing before him.
