PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - College track and field stars from throughout the nation will be out to break all collegiate and world records, and especially previous Prairie View records, when they meet here April 1 and 2 for the 23rd running of the famed Prairie View relays.
The big spring event at Prairie View is one of the nation's leaders and has produced many outstanding records in track and field activity. Prairie View Relay performances parallel very closely with other collegiate, American and World records. The number one thriller is the C. H. Waller Memorial one mile relay which was set at 3:22.5 at Prairie View in 1942.
The 880 yard relay has a Prairie View all-time record of 1:28 compared with the world record of 1:25.
Other Prairie View relay records are 440, 41.1 seconds (world, 40.5); and the two mile, 8:2.6 seconds (world 7:29.2).
Other field activities have produced the following Prairie View records: 440 yard dash, 49.9 seconds; one mile run, 4:27.6; 100 yard dash 9.4 seconds (world, 9.3); 120 yard high hurdles, 14.8 seconds; broad jump, 25 feet; high jump, 6'6"; pole vault; 12'9"; shot put, 49' 10 1-2; javelin throw 203' 6 1-2"; and discus throw 12'9".
A tennis tournament, in both men's and women's divisions and the first annual golf tournament will run concurrently with track and field activities.
