PARRIS ISLAND, S.C.--Official at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot here announced Monday that the greatest number of recruits since World War II days are now training here.
At noon March 10 the total reached 21,420 new Marines who were at Parris Island for training.
Normally all Marine enlistees and inductees from states east of the Mississippi River come here for eight weeks of intensive indoctrination before being assigned to a regular Marine Corps duty post.
Earlier in the year, officials here had expected the number of recruits in training at Parris Island to begin to drop off in March. However, increased voluntary enlistments recently were credited with keeping the input of new recruits high despite lowered draft quotas.
The number of Marines in training here is expected to drop gradually from this week's high, however, until only from 10,000 to 15,000 men are in "boot" camp by June.
