Beecher takes the Tilton revelations quite coolly. He says he is in the hands of his church, and would defer to its action. At his Peekskill farm, last Thursday, he said to a friend, who made reference to the new version of the scandal, that 'there was nothing revealed in the recent published story that had not been known to the principal members of the church long ago; and as to the penitential tone and admissions of the letter, about which so much had been said, that was capable of an explanation, and which was already known to some of his friends. No practical good could come of any further illumination of a story that had already been buried in a way that had been satisfactory to everybody who had any interest in it.' This passage of Beecher reads like Moses' vindication of himself against the New York Times.
