Full Text

The Louisiana Exposures.
The disclosures of rascality made before the Potter sub-committee in Louisiana are absolutely appalling. The leading politicians seem to have been men with no fear of God or respect for the laws of man. Stealing thousands of dollars from their already impoverished State, offering their votes for sale, and committing perjury and sometimes murder to hide their crimes, seems to have been the regular mode of proceeding under the Packard government. And yet this was the government which many well-meaning men in the Northern States desired President Grant to sustain at the point of the bayonet. It is to be hoped that the exposures made by the Potter investigation will show the people at large the danger of trusting men who make politics a matter of dollars and cents.
