THE UNITED STATES SENATE.—This body consists of 52 members; at present there are four vacancies, so that the parties are now represented thus Democrats 28. Whigs 20. The vacancies are, one from Virginia, one from Delaware, two from North Carolina. If Whigs should be elected to supply these vacancies, the parties will then stand: Democrats 28, Whigs 21, and this will probably be the state of parties in the Senate, during the next Session of Congress. On the 4th March next, the term of service of Wall of New Jersey, Roane of Virginia, Nicholas of Louisiana, Norvell of Michigan, and Larking of Georgia will expire, and unless some revolution shall occur in the politics of those States, it is probable their places may be supplied by Whigs. Should this be so, they will have a majority of 6 in the Senate. The parties will stand thus, Whigs 29, Democrats 23. This is rather a more gloomy aspect of coming events, than we like to contemplate. It is, we think scarcely possible that the result may be as above stated. If however South Carolina, was represented as she ought to be, and Virginia should be true to herself, and her principles, parties would be equally divided, 26 to 26. The Whigs, however, must have a much larger majority than 6, before they do anything more than oppose the measures of the Democratic party. The principle of opposition is the only one, in which there is any general concurrence of opinion among them. They will divide, the moment they come to carry out any scheme, of any branch, of the great Whig party.
