Full Text

Another instance of the relentless malignity of the Spanish Government has just been developed. It appears that the former Consul for East Florida, Augustin De Letmendi, who was appointed by the Constitutional Government to reside at St. Augustine, has been formally condemned to death, on the charge of having been engaged in the rencontre which took place in the Capital between the Constitutionals and the Royal Guard in July, 1822, and for disseminating liberal principles during the revolution, as Editor of the Madrid Gazette. It is a fortunate circumstance for this gentleman that he knew how to appreciate the character of those who direct the institutions of that miserable country, and made his escape in time to reach the United States, where he now enjoys, in the bosom of his family, at Charleston, that repose which was denied in the land of his nativity.

The same sentence has been passed upon Col. Joseph Facio, who now holds a public office under the government of the State of Vera Cruz.
