Lynchburg, Va. was enlivened last week by the arrival of three or four dozen consignments of splendid bright yellow tobacco from Buncombe and Madison counties of North Carolina,—shipped from Asheville to Morristown, and thence down the railroad. The Virginian says: "This tobacco has been coming here for many years in small lots, but this year it has broken loose in very astonishing quantities. It is mostly bright yellow leaf, such as is needed by the manufacturers for their fine work, and of which there is generally a scarcity in the market. Some of that sold yesterday went as high as sixty dollars per hundred." One firm names 28 farmers of Buncombe and Madison, and says: "We have thus early in the season made for them sales at $50, $51, $66, and $105 per hundred much the highest prices in any market this season." Joseph N. Ramsey sold 200 lbs. at $51; 54 lbs. at $66, and 27 lbs. at $105. J. M. Robinson Esq., obtained $28, $32, and $60. Mr. Lee Henderson, $80 per hundred. One hundred hogsheads of bright-yellow North Carolina tobacco were sold at Lynch's warehouse the same day.
We call attention to this new departure for three reasons: 1st. It shows what our tobacco towns, Winston, Durham, &c., lose for lack of railway connection with the trans-montane region. 2nd. It shows, as we have before remarked, that North Carolina raises a good deal of tobacco which, being sent out of the State, is not enumerated in the estimate of our tobacco crop. 3rd. It shows that even in the high-land section, the Old North State can compete with any other State in the excellence of her products.
