Full Text

An O D E on His Grace the Duke of Devonshire's being promoted to the Lieutenancy of Ireland.

Humbly Inscribed to His Excellency, by Mr. Robert Reading, only Son of the Hon. Colonel Reading, deceased.

While awful Cannon with tremendous Roar,
Emit their Thunder from the trembling Shore:
On this auspicious Morn, the rising Sun
With pompous Glory, drove his Chariot on,
Deck'd with transcendent Rays, Devon's Lord,
To whom Augustus had bequeath'd his Sword.
Hail Mercy! thou Impartial Grace!
That now has reach'd the Shore,
Triumphant Justice Shews her Face,
And veils her Charms no more.
Remote Sorrows lost in Air,
And once impoverish'd Mortals bear
A Look compos'd, contented Mien,
And Joy in every Aspect seen.
No Wonder! When Souls are to Pity inclin'd
Inspir'd with a gen'rous Politeness of Mind,
To nought but the Tranquil of Virtue resign'd.
Ever New, and ever Glorious,
Cavendish Blessings will improve,
And an Age in Lines Historious,
Evermore record his Love.
Sweet Deportment, till engaging
Wisdom, future Bliss presaging
Calm, and gentle Sweets adorning
Years, as this delightful Morning,
Shall eternally remain :
With Triumph and Pleasure,
Let's value our Treasure,
In Strains never tiring,
The Hero admiring,
Sincerely desiring his prosperous Reign,
The Nation's Advantage and Rights to maintain.
Devouring Time with stealing Hours
May change th' immortal Scene we view :
As the Fountain Water pours,
May the next his Steps pursue.
Subjects like him in social Worth combine,
And as in Glory, so in Friendship shine.
