It makes no difference whether the candidate of such a party is a soldier himself—yes, it makes this
difference: it renders him more odious to the true American soldier than a regular peace candidate would be; for he becomes in his own person, by his acceptance of the position, responsible for and guilty of all the contumely, reproach and slander that the traitorous Copperhead party, of which he is the candidate, has heaped upon the soldier, the army, the flag, and the cause of the American Union.
