BOB WHITE IN THE SOUTH.—It appears that while quail are so scarce in the Northern region during this winter, they are in great abundance in portions of the South. A correspondent, who dates from Carrollton, Pickens county, Alabama, under date of January 23d, says:

I see from your paper that quails, or as we call them, partridges, are very scarce in the Middle and Western States, extending down even to Virginia; it may therefore surprise you to learn that they have never been known in such multitudes as they are now found in West Alabama. The negroes on the plantations around here catch them by hundreds in common traps, and as for netting, it has ceased to be a sport from the ease with which they are caught. I live in the suburbs of this little village, and can at any time find a covey within fifty yards of my house. Can it be that the Northern families migrated South last winter?

It would seem likely that they had: in that case we should be delighted to welcome their return.—New York Porter's Spirit.
