WASHINGTON- (SNS) - The House in a stormy opening of its new session Wednesday approved a resolution to make the Committee on un-American Activities a permanent investigating body. It is known generally as the Dies Committee. The vote was 207 to 186.
The resolution was sponsored by Representative John Rankin, (D-Miss.). Martin Dies, Texas Congressman, for many years, who headed the committee, did not offer for re-election, and in line for the chairmanship is Rankin.
