Full Text

The surviving relatives of Judge Holmes deceased, have observed with regret in the obituary notice published in your paper, that allusion is made to his having died at a small public house, where he did not experience those attentions and that kindness which are so consoling to the sick and dying.

Permit them to correct this error, and to say that the house to which he was carried after the accident occurred is a very respectable one, and that the inmates of it devoted themselves with unwearied assiduity and tenderness to him during the whole of his sickness and to the hour of his death. He had kind and skilful physicians to attend him, who were assisted and advised by some of the ablest counsel in the state. His nearest relatives were with him during the greatest part of his sickness and at the close of life, and beg leave to express a most lively sense of gratitude to the family and neighbors for their uncommon kindness, and to the pious clergyman whose prayers, the prayers of the righteous "which avail much," were repeatedly offered up at the bedside of the stranger whom the Providence of God had placed among them in such afflicting circumstances.

[We cheerfully insert the above, because if any of our readers construed our notice of Judge Holmes' decease, as conveying any censure upon the family with whom he was cast by his affliction, such an impression ought to be effaced. We did not intend to convey such an idea. The death of Judge Holmes was a great loss to his family and society; his death being occasioned by the fracture of a limb, at a distance from home, among strangers—there to suffer pain, sickness and dissolution—these were aggravating circumstances attending his death—this is all we intended to say in our obituary notice.]
