Debt Owed Randolph

The nation owes A. Philip Randolph a debt of gratitude. It was through him that official Washington, in the person of the president, finally took notice of the discriminatory treatment being accorded the Negro population. It was through his efforts that the president issued an executive order barring discrimination in defense industries. This was promulgated only because Randolph refused to give ground and call off the March on Washington. When the order was issued, however, Randolph announced that the march was "postponed," thus leaving it hanging as a threat for some future date.

Randolph has won the praise and respect of many men because the railroads could not buy him off at a time he could have become a rich man, but he would rather stick by the Pullman porters who trusted him than to seek personal gain.

Many more such leaders of the race are needed before we can reach the standards we desire.
