Enough Joy for One Day.
On Tuesday evening last the glorious sun of heaven threw its last rays upon us as a redeemed, a disenthralled and happy people. The warm and impulsive hearts that had so enthusiastically beat for weeks, and which on that day rose higher and higher as the pulse of the patient does when his fever is culminating, rests easy now in its victory, and so joyous do we all feel that in this bright hour we can truly proclaim, "peace on earth, good will toward men." As we go to press the full returns are not to hand, but we know enough to know that all is well, and Kershaw, our home, is once more our own, for the first time since our brave soldiers turned their swords into plow shares. Thank heaven for all of this. May the despoiler's foot never again press upon our necks; may home rule give us prosperity, and may a new future be ours. Let us in this hour of joy be as all brave people are—tolerant and forbearing. It is true that we have stood much, but as we are conquerors to-day we can afford to be charitable, and when we look upon our defeated enemies, we can with mercy repeat those sublime words of Pope:
"Teach me to feel another's woe,
To hide the faults I see:
That mercy I to others show,
That mercy show to me."
