Fast Day.--I was pleased to observe the quietness of our streets on the day of the State Fast--these days have been too long abused by a portion of our population, especially the young and thoughtless, for the purposes of riot and amusement, instead of being occupied, as by our pious ancestors they were designed to be, in the duties of religion. The remarkable quietness of the last fast day, is to be principally attributed to the laudable attention of two of our School Masters, who took the trouble to assemble their scholars and accompany them to the place of public worship on both parts of the day. The neat appearance of the children, their decent and orderly conduct in going to, and during their attendance at meeting, evinced the care and ability of their instructors. (Messrs. Greenleaf and Weeks) and formed a striking contrast to the dirty and disorderly appearance of the children so often and so recently to be found in some of the streets of our town.
The thanks of every lover of good order are certainly due to those who use their influence to promote good habits among that interesting portion of our population, the "rising hope" of our country
