The Albany Standard, a staunch Democratic journal which opposes treason in every shape and form, asks the following pertinent question:
"The New York News will disseminate its views freely and fearlessly, and will continue to oppose the present fratricidal war, even though it be at the risk of property, personal liberty, and life. Benjamin Wood."
Mr. Wood having put his name to the above, we should like to know why the Government hesitates to lock him up during the war? If Ben. Wood can have the freedom of New York, why not Jeff. Davis and Gen. Beauregard?
The Only Alternative—Our only alternative now, North and South, is between the government of the United States and the government of Jeff. Davis. There is no other choice now. He that is not with us is against us, and the issue is simply the overthrow of our government or the suppression of the despotism of Davis. This continent is not large enough for both as matters now stand. One or the other must go down—Which shall it be? That is the question.—N. Y. Herald.
