Police Still Baffled by Horrible Murder of Little Alphonse Wilmes, of Detroit—Similar to Rockford, Ill., Crime, In Which Newsboy Was the Victim.
Detroit, Aug. 19.—The police today are as far from the solution of the horrible murder of little Alphonse Wilmes as they were when the mutilated body was found yesterday. Charles Edwards, the suspect who was placed under arrest last night, and who gives his residence as Bangor, Me., is still detained, but Lieutenant Sadler, of the detective department, said today that he is satisfied Edwards is not guilty of the crime.
Local officers telegraphed last night to the police at Rockford, Ill., asking for a complete description of the killing of a newsboy in that city several weeks ago which bears so much resemblance to the crime here. In reply the Rockford chief of police wired that he had already mailed a full history of the case and description of the mutilation of the boy there. The entire river front in the vicinity of the lot where the boy was found has been searched without finding the slightest trace of blood, and no one can be found in the neighborhood who saw the murdered lad during the evening.
The movements of Alphonse after he left his little sister near home Monday afternoon is still a mystery. The entire detective department is working on the case today.
