Housing Shortage
A day hardly passes by those who own tenement houses without several inquiries from persons desiring rooms to rent. This is an indication of the housing shortage in Frederiksted that is likely to become more acute in the month ahead.
It is imperative for us to see that more tenement houses of various kinds are needed in St. Croix and should be supplied if we are to profit from the boom years ahead.
This boom has been in the making for a long time and is bound to increase in the near future.
It is submitted that property owners are confronted with grave problems in getting repairs done, and new buildings constructed but the effort should be to strive to surmount these problems instead of trying to escape them.
For many years the population of Frederiksted has been decreasing, and will continue to decrease unless we bestir ourselves to supply the homes necessary to encourage the increase of population.
The Federal government is already doing its part, and so are individual home owners. But that is not enough. As a matter of fact the Municipality as well as private enterprise should participate in supplying this urgent need.
