SACRAMENTO, Dec. 10. (UP) Dr. H. Dewey Anderson, 41, Phi Beta Kappa college professor and avowed advocate of higher taxes on upper income brackets, was named today as the new director of state relief for California. A key member of the so-called "little brain trust" advising Governor-Elect Culbert Olson, Anderson was first mentioned prominently for the post of state director of finance.
Olson said, however, he considered the relief job "one of the most important in the state." He said he chose Anderson because his qualifications fitted him to direct a proposed self-help plan for the unemployed.
The yearly salary was boosted to $10,000 from the $6,000 salary paid Harold Pomeroy, whom Anderson will succeed when the new Democratic state officers take over Jan. 2.
In recalling attention to his prospective self-help cooperative plan, Olson said it was designed to lessen the burden of taxation. He said "serious consequences" were threatened unless the state found some means of providing for employment of about 20 per cent of the employable persons now unable to obtain work in private industry.
Anderson's training resulted in his being selected "for constructive work" in the self-help field, Olson said.
