Full Text

The Sentinel was not awarded the contract yesterday to publish the delinquent tax list of the county, even though its bid was for a third less than the successful bidder. The commissioners made the award on the ground that the successful bidder had a larger circulation for his paper. However the Weekly Sentinel guaranteed to issue a thousand papers at each issue, had it have been awarded the contract and its offer would have served every purpose of giving good and sufficient notice at a cost of several hundred dollars less to the county. It has been the policy of the publishers of this paper always, however, to take their medicine like men and not to whine, hence we unhesitatingly say that while in justice we should have received the order for publication, it can say honestly that the News is not receiving too much for the work, only half enough. But the board of commissioners advertised to receive bids and did so with the purpose to secure the lowest price and while the Weekly Sentinel may not have the circulation of the News, it certainly had sufficient to guarantee good publicity to the tax list and a great saving to the county. The commissioners who voted to over-ride our bid, at such great saving to the county, will doubtless live with us here for several years to come and if their public careers are not ended by their present positions, we will undertake to keep this master stroke of economy before the public.
