Confusing Matters,—In addition to the Independent Union State Convention call heretofore alluded to in this paper, another call is being advertised in the Sacramento Union. It reads as follows:
Union Men, Attention!—All men who consider the perpetuity of the American Union of more value than the blood or existence of traitors, and an assured victory for the Union above mere past party differences or personal preferences, are requested to form in each election precinct, a "Union Club," the members of which shall pledge their honors to be uninfluenced in the coming canvass, in their selection of candidates or the adoption of a platform, by past party considerations; and such club to send one of its number to the county seat, to act as a member of a County Central Committee, which Committee shall select a number of Club members equal to the county's representation in both branches of the Legislature, to a Union State Convention, to be held at the city of Sacramento on the Fourth Monday in June, to nominate a State and Congressional ticket. The County Committee will also call County Conventions, based upon the number of enrolled members of the Union Clubs in the precincts, to nominate county officers.
How many more Union Conventions are to be called nobody knows. The secessionists will have an easy victory if Union men are divided into half a dozen squads. Let the Conventions already called put out their tickets, and then let the Union Clubs select from them, if they can please themselves; if not, it will then be time enough to repudiate all, and hold one grand Union Convention to do what shall be left undone.
