Extract of a Letter to a Gentleman in this Town, dated at the Camp on Crown Point Road, about 10 Miles from Charlestown, or Numb. Four, July 4, 1760.
Our (New Hampshire) Regiment is allowed by every Body to be as fine and likely a Regiment as any one that was ever raised in America; and they are in general as willing to work as Men can be; but such have been our Hindrances, arising from one Quarter and another, that altho' it is more than a Month since we arrived at Numb. Four, we have not advanced more than 11 Miles on the new Road. besides building a Block House, a Scow, a Boat, and some Work done in the old Fort at Numb. Four.- Many Bridges to make. The Land we have passed over is generally unequal and mountainous; some Mountains forming an Angle of 20 Degrees, or more, at the Base, and more than 1 Quarter of a Mile Ascent. The Wood thick and tall. and chiefly Rock Maple, Beach, and Hemlock. The Soil naturally exceeding rich and good, and the more so the farther we advance.--- It is judged on all Hands that it will be a Month before we shall complete the Road to Crown Point.-- Two or three Days ago an Indian was seen by one of our Officers standing in the Road, about a Mile from the Encampment: We every now and then discover Signs of some Skulking Fellows round about us. but we don't seem to be at all alarmed by such Discoveries.
