Mr. Bradford, about anarchy and confusion. But it will be very unfortunate
if the predictions of anarchy and
confusion from a convention, should
merely serve (like the tub thrown out
to the whale) to draw off our attention
from that anarchy which hath already
begun. This is really the very
worst species of it: -- it comes on by
degrees: -- its magnitude is too inconsiderable
to excite alarm: -- it is like
the prophet's cloud, no bigger than a
man's hand: but like that cloud it
will in a while darken the earth and
pour down desolation and terror.
I have trespassed longer on you
Mr. Bradford, than I thought of. The
subject, however, is important -- and
I think you will readily devote a column
to it. It was not to reflect on
the town of Frankfort, or to vindicate
an individual, that I took up my pen.
For the former I feel no inclination.
-- and having no acquaintance
with the party concerned, I cannot be
anxious about the latter. I dread the
precedent: I tremble when I contemplate
its possible effects on our minds,
our manners and our government:
and though I feel a glowing attachment
to representative democracy;
yet a mob court of justice and a mob
government my soul abominates.
