Fully 250 members of the Butchers and Grocers' Retail association and their friends attended the benefit dance given by the organization last night at the Modern Woodmen hall, Jennings block, and later sat down to a banquet which made four thirty-foot tables groan under its weight.
The ball and banquet were given as a benefit to Mrs. A. C. Myers, whose husband, formerly a member of the firm of Myers & Jensen, recently passed away.
The dance hall was decorated with ribbons and flowers, and during the course of the programme a quartette rendered several selections. Those who composed the quartette were Joseph Poll, first tenor; W. A. Fuller, second tenor; A. E. Braby, baritone, and R. Ness, bass.
The floor and programme arrangements were under the direction of E. C. Allen, C. H. Cutting, R. Papworth, F. H. Weight, J. A. Eckman, B. Milan, F. M. Baer and Joseph Hall. At 10:30 o'clock there was an intermission, during which supper was served.
Covers For Two Hundred.
The Electrical Workers' headquarters had been converted into a banquet hall. Chrysanthemums, palms and ferns were banked against the tables. Covers were laid for 250. While supper was in progress short addresses on the occasion, the aims and means of the Butchers and Grocers' Retail association, were made by President W. J. Donnellan, Secretary John A. Burt and others.
Last night's dance was the first function given by the Butchers and Grocers Retail association, excepting the barbecue picnic to Lagoon late in the summer, since the ball last spring. Secretary Burt, in speaking of the fact that the proceeds of this affair were to be used for charitable purposes, said that several hundred tickets in addition to those presented at the door had been left about the city at various butcher shops and stores. Few of these have been returned, so the receipts will probably represent a considerable sum.
