Monteith School
Summarizes First Semester
Everyone is very happy to have Miss Geraldine Spaulding of Savannah State College, do her Student Teaching in the school. The class presented an interesting Orientation Program for her on the first day.
The entire group has taken a look at the work for the first semester, in all areas. "Inservice theme for the year is: "How Can We Improve The Teaching of Arithmetic and Science in Grades 1-4.". The consultants were: Mrs. I. Fields, Jones Supervisor; Mrs. J. Askew, Elementary Supervisor; Mrs. Geneva Mitchell, 5th Grade teacher of Cloverdale Elementary School: Mrs. L. Parker Elementary Supervisor, Miss B. Darby, Music Supervisor.
The upper grades have been working on: "Exploring With Friends Far and Near."
They have taken many imaginary trips to different countries. The Primary group have studied about the "Family and the Home" and also "Community Life." The classroom work has taken on much more meaning with the use of many new media in the area of Science and arithmetic.
The School Clubs have been very active also. The 4-H. Club has added beauty to the school by helping with flowers: The School Assembly which was held during American Education Week was very interesting. The Dramatic Club, assisted by the Music Club presented a play entitled, "Santa's Birthday Cake." Many Special Days were given emphasis during the period. Many members of the School Chorus attended the Symphony Concert.
The P. T. A. has been very busy during the first semester too. The following persons represented at the workshop at Sol Johnson School; Mr. and Mrs. James Jones and Mrs. D. Lee. Messrs C. Whitehead and J. Bowers represented the Health Committee. Mr. Purvis Adams is the president.
The following were consultants in the P. T. A. activities: Mr. Homer B. Glover, Health Educator for Chatham County; Mildred Hutchins. State P. T. A. Secretary; Mrs. Gertrude Greene, Psychologist; Mrs. P. Manor; and Mrs. Thelma Wright, Public Relations Chairman for T. B. and Mrs. Lillian Brown, Public Health Nurse.
The following pupils made the honor roll for the first Semester:
1st Grade; Virginia Heyward; Keith Bing and Kenneth Bing; 2nd Grade: Ronnie Lee, Liza Singleton and Doretha Wilson; 3rd Grade: Lamar Palmer, Rose Marie Glover; 4th Grade: James Steele; Shirley Ann Bryant and Carrie Belle Lexley.
Mrs. O. B. Dingle is principal.
