New York Shows
Increase In Use
Of Negro Help
BY ALVIN E. WHITE
NEW YORK (ANP) This year,
more Negroes are employed as
extra workers to handle the Christ-
mas rush than at any year in the
past. Conservative estimates say
over 10,000 women have found
work of some kind for the three
weeks before Christmas and their
total take-home pay will run well
over a million dollars.
They are saleswomen, wrappers,
taggers, and other employees in
nearly every department store in
the city. Up to 15 years ago, the
sight of a Negro sales person in
a downtown store would have
created a riot. But by gradually
taking them into the general pict-
ure, they have been absorbed and
accepted in a matter-of-fact fash-
ion. Of course, there still are some
die-hards who hate to have
a
brown-skinned person
wait on
them, but there are millions
of
others who see nothing strange in
this.
Men too are finding jobs
as
shippers, expressmen,
de-
livery men, porters and other
types of skilled and semi-skilled
labor. They too have profited by
the general change that has come
over New York's employment pol-
icy, yet, there
are
still
many
changes to be made.
