Independent Candidates,
Jno. T. Cooley, independent Democratic candidate for Senator, is one of the "old settlers" of the county. His strong arm and vigorous system have done their part in felling the forest and improving the country. He is a plain unassuming farmer-once elected to the legislature by the Democracy- steadfast in his adherence to principles, he could not be induced to abandon them and follow the dictation of party leaders and Court House cliques. The contest is between him and Aaron B. Line, we can choose but one way, in favor of the independence of Cooley-- of the man who has the moral courage to adhere to popular sovereignty.
Dr. A. J. Biddinger the independent candidate for the legislature is a man of great moral worth-consistent in his steadfast opposition to the unjust demands of the slave power, and well qualified to represent Franklin County.
Francis A. Bauer the independent candidate for Treasurer, is a German by birth-has resided in this county 25 years, is a farmer and merchant by occupation, and well qualified for the duties of the office. Mr. Bauer reads, writes and speaks both English and German, fluently. To the business qualifications requisite for the office, we cheerfully add, that he is no politician, and if elected will be independent of the Court House clique.
John L. Shank candidate for county Auditor, is the son of Thomas Shank, who resides just below the 'Case" Dam. John was raised on the farm and was taught in the school of experience. For several years he has been engaged as a civil engineer on the canal and various Railroads. He stands high in his profession and will, no doubt, make a superior Auditor, if elected.
"Low Lynn" independent candidate for Sheriff is too well known in this county to require eulogy from us. His brawny arms and hawk-eyes, once in possession of a King, we will guarantee his safe conduct to Jeffersonville. Try him friends, and let us see the Blacksmith "blowing and striking" in another place.
Judge Giles Gant, independent candidate for county Commissioner is well acquainted with the county affairs, has age, experience and the will, to practice strict economy in public expenditures, and will doubtlessly, if elected, arrest the present extravagance, so far as is in his power. The Court House clique grow sick at the thought of the Judges success. His election would be to them as good as a dose of Brandreth's pills. Suppose we administer them.
