POLITICAL RULE of THREE,
OR,
A Problem for the Federalists to solve.
If 15,000,000 of dollars would build and equip 43 ships, mount 74 guns (as will the federalists) how many frigates may 10,546,000 dollars build.
The first of the above sums is to be paid by the United States (a part directly to our own merchants, and of the remainder we believe not a farthing will ever go in France in specie) for an extent of territory larger than the original thirteen states, bordering on one of the finest rivers in the known world. This territory includes the rich commercial and flourishing city of New-Orleans, the soil extremely fertile in the richest commodities, and the acquisition adds more than half a million of inhabitants to our population.
The latter sum was expended during the four years of Mr. Adams' administration, to build ten frigates, finish three others, carrying from 28 to 44 guns, build twelve or fourteen smaller vessels, carrying from 14 to 22 guns, and ten galleys mounting 1 gun each.
