The Discussion on Monday.--The citizens of this county were addressed on Monday last by Mr. Tidball, of Winchester, Mr. Allen, of Moorefield, P. Williams, Jr., and G. B. Samuels, upon the great questions upon which the approaching presidential election is to turn, viz: National Bank, Tariff, Texas, &c. It would be a work of supererogation in us to give a detailed account of the speeches, as every man who has heard a political discussion in the last twelve months would only hear the same subjects reiterated, relative to all those great questions already named. Suffice it to say, then, that the speakers acquitted themselves with much credit on the occasion. The whole affair was conducted in a dignified way. Everybody were very well pleased with the performances of the gentlemen who spoke upon the Democratic side; and the Coons appeared to manifest their entire approbation of that of their champions.

We have heard the declaration made here more than once, that any thing in the shape of argument before the people of this county. was of no avail-totally unprofitable-that they could not appreciate the force of argument, however simple. But we think the people of this country can very easily discriminate between a coon and that Democracy to which they have been so long and so ardently devoted-Jeffersonian Democracy. The reason, we suppose, why the "Tenth Legion" is so abominably ignorant in the eyes of all good coons, is that they will not sit at the feet of their Idol, Henry Clay, and sing songs out of the book with the "Yaller Kiver."

The tergiversating little Coon, who writes for the Harrisonburg Republican, says that we have become so very personal toward him, that he can have nothing more to do with us. Very good. We are perfectly satisfied. But as it regards personalities, our readers know. and everybody who has paid any attention to our castigation of the would-be Democratic scribbler of the Republican, that he provoked us to the use of severe language by his classical allusions in his reply to the article in which we objected to his using the term Democratic with reference to himself or his party. With such a being-a man professing great reverence for decency and regard practised the reverse --we have no sympathy-such a being deserves to be castigated with a lash of scorpions,' that he may learn that which was perhaps never taught him, a respect for the feelings of his superiors (as his slandered neighbors of Harrisonburg undoubtedly are, in every sense, morally, intellectually, and politically.) We know not that we shall hereafter notice the Republican's editor, unless it should be with reference to more important matters to us personally than have yet emanated from that quarter. Politically, we feel confident, he is innocent perfectly incapable of doing the cause we advocate the least imaginable harm.
