Report on the Property of the Late W. B. Leeds Made at Mineola.
MINEOLA, L. I., Dec. 29.—The tax appraiser's report of the estate of William B. Leeds, who died in Paris on June 23, was filed with Surrogate Jackson here to-day. It shows the estate to be valued at $14,064,465.78. The tax is $82,290.02.
Mr. Leeds's will leaves to the widow, Nonnie Stewart Leeds, $5,403,533.50 in personal estate, besides $150,000 in cash. William B. Leeds, Jr., receives $1,611,159 and Rudolph Gaar Leeds, the son of Mr. Leeds's first wife, $1,000,000. James F. Elder, Mr. Leeds's secretary, receives $25,000.
In addition to the above amount Mrs. Leeds receives the house at 987 Fifth avenue, the building at 118 West Seventeenth street, which is valued at $190,000, and all of Mr. Leeds's automobiles, horses, carriages, wearing apparel, jewelry, furniture and a box at the Metropolitan Opera House; also the beautiful place at Newport, which was the old Vanderbilt estate and which is valued at more than $3,000,000. This last is not mentioned in the report filed here to-day.
It is thought that the estate is far more valuable than the report shows, as a number of paintings are valued at prices that are considered low. The report shows that the household furniture at Newport is worth $209,085, the yacht Noma is valued at $150,000, two tapestries in the Manhattan house $5,000 and one small rug $1,200.
The Fifth avenue house is valued at $265,000. The personal estate includes stocks and bonds in almost every large corporation of any prominence in this country.
The expense attached to the estate of administration and other bills will foot up to $5,854,215.88, which will leave a balance when everything is paid off of $8,201,250.40 to distribute.
There is a romance about the first meeting of Mr. and Mrs. Leeds which came out when a lawyer for the estate spoke of the yacht Noma. With Mr. Leeds on board, the yacht was lying some distance off shore at Newport when a young girl was seen to swim out from shore and circle three times around the yacht. Mr. Leeds asked her to come on board for a few minutes and rest before she returned to shore. The young woman, who was Nonnie Stewart, accepted the invitation and came aboard and rested. Mr. Leeds admired her feat of swimming and a friendship sprung up between them which ended in their marriage.
