THE RHODE-ISLANDER.

The Subscribers this day commence the publication of a non-political journal, with the above title, to take the place of the Rhode-Island Republican, which has been discontinued.

By the phrase "non-political" we mean, that all articles of a party character or bearing shall be rigorously excluded from its columns; and in giving the results of elections we shall, if possible, present the statements of the leading papers of each party; and in all cases name the authority from which the returns are derived. This course will, we think, give satisfaction to every reasonable man; and we pledge ourselves, honestly and in good faith, to observe it strictly.

We have long been of opinion that a journal which contained light and instructive reading matter, combined with local intelligence and the current news of the day, and excluded political articles, would find more favor with the people of this town (certainly with the fairer portion) than a political paper of any kind; and it is with the determination to exert all the abilities we possess to produce a good family newspaper, that we issue these proposals.

In all respects other than politics, The Rhode-Islander will be conducted in the same manner that the Republican has been since it came into our hands; which we believe has given general satisfaction, and, in spite of the unpopularity of the political doctrines it advocated, has increased its circulation in town to a much greater number than it had for many years, if ever before, enjoyed. It may be considered egotism in us to mention this, but being fact, we hope it will be excused. The exclusion of political articles will give us more room for those of an amusing or instructive character, and we shall make as much improvement in every way as lies in our power.

The News department, especially local occurrences and marine intelligence, will receive particular attention.

As a Literary paper it will make no pretensions to excellence, but we shall give it that character in a degree; and for that purpose we solicit, and hope to receive, in communications, the aid of our friends and fellow citizens.

A regular series of Popular Tales will be published in its columns; and in selecting them we shall take much pains to cull such as combine a good moral with instruction and amusement.

With this exposition of our views and intentions we submit our proposals to the public, and ask for them an unprejudiced consideration.

THE RHODE-ISLANDER is published every Wednesday morning, on a large imperial sheet, and will be furnished to subscribers on the following

TERMS.

For One Year's subscription, if paid during the year, or within one month after it has expired, $2.00

Do. do. do. if not paid before the expiration of the month of grace, $2.25

And 25 cents, in addition, for every successive period of three months that each year's subscription remains unpaid.

For One Year's subscription, if actually paid in cash, in advance, at the Office, $1.75 cts will be received; but not at that rate for a shorter period.

No paper will be discontinued until arrearages are paid, except at the option of the publishers.
