NEWPORT, April 4. Extract of a Letter from New-York, to a Gentleman in this Town, dated March 27, 1768.

" I have a Letter from my Friend at St. Eutatia. dated 25th of February, in which is the following Paragraph,--

" We have nothing but Confusion here, occasioned by News which arrived a few Days ago from Holland; that is, our Island, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John's, are to be in the Hands of the English in the Course of the present Year, in lieu of some German Dominions to be ceded on the part of Great-Britain : And never was such a pressing Time, since I knew the Place, for Money ; little Business being carried on at present, as it is said some Gentlemen have Confirmation, and offer to lay five Thousand Pounds to one, that St. Eutatia will be ceded to Great-Britain within four Months after the 15th of March. Also we are credibly informed, by a Sloop which left Gaudaloupe a few Days ago, of the Arrival of ten Sail of Ships, of 60 and 74 Guns, besides a Number of Transports, and three Thousand Men ; and it is the general Opinion of every Person. that we shall have a WAR soon : An Express arrived a few Days ago from England. and only stay'd 24 Hours in St. Kitts, and sailed for Jamaica. In the St. Kitts Paper there are orders to repair all the Forts ; and to see that there are Provisions enough for five Hundred Men on Brimstone-Hill, also to get the Militia in good Order to receive a General who was never in the West-Indies before, and now daily expected to go upon a secret Expedition, of which none can judge at present.-e- A Frenchman bought a 12 Gun Sloop here Yesterday, and paid down 2525 Dollars, amounting to . 2525 our Currency; and sailed next Day for Martinico."
