University Of Maryland To Give Negroes Scholarships

WASHINGTON (UPI)-The University of Maryland was reported Monday to have decided to offer athletic scholarships to Negroes.

The Washington Post said the decision to give the athletic scholarships to Negroes was made at a recent board of regents meeting.

Maryland athletic director Bill Cobey said "it was possible" the school would have Negro athletes next fall if they met academic standards. But he declined to confirm that the board of regents had approved the scholarships.

Football coach Tom Nugent, according to the Post, said Negro athletes were being considered at Maryland. He was reported to have said that several Negro boys from the Washington area were under consideration.

Maryland has never had a Negro athlete, although it has Negro students. Maryland plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference with several southern schools, and Cobey said any problems caused by possible Maryland Negro players will "have to be handled if and when they arise."
