STATEMENT ON POLICY
OF HOSPITAL IN D. C.
Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam of the Washington area released a statement to this newspaper Monday, relative to the racial policy of Sibley Hospital, a Methodist institution in Washington, D. C.
"I am chairman of the board of trustees of Sibley Hospital," Bishop Oxnam said. "The first question I asked upon assuming office was, 'Is there any regulation barring any person from the hospital because of race?'
"I was informed there is no such rule. No person will be excluded from the new Sibley Hospital because of race, religion, or nationality."
The "new Sibley Hospital" referred to by the bishop is now under construction near American University in the nation's capital. Nearly ten years ago the original institution received unfavorable publicity when it was reported that a woman was denied admittance because of her race, and gave birth to her child outside in the snow.
Reliable sources termed the incident "very unfortunate" in view of the bi-racial policy of the Methodist Church. The spokesman said it was probably due to poor judgement on the part of a subordinate hospital employee, and stated,
It will never happen again.
