MUNICIPAL ELECTION IN WASHINGTON.
The election at Washington, yesterday, for Mayor and members of the City Council, resulted in the defeat of the regular Republican candidate, Mr. Sayles J. Bowen, and the election of Mr. Matthew G. Emery. From the Associated Press we have the following particulars of the contest:

Never before has there been so much interest in a municipal election in this city. The main contest was between Mr. Bowen, present Mayor, and Mr. Emery, also a Republican, who was for the greater part supported by those outside that organization. The Emery men claim the election of their candidate by over 3,000 majority, together with that of their candidates for the City Council. Cannons are fired and bonfires lighted to night by the victors.

At the Third Ward polls during a difficulty between whites and blacks, one of the latter was shot in the wrist.

A riot occurred in the Seventh Ward, which became so serious that officers were obliged to resort to force. A colored man was shot by one of them, the ball entering the left side.

By riding into the vast crowd of several thousand persons and briskly using their batons the mounted police succeeded in dispersing the rioters. Some were arrested. With these exceptions there was general good order throughout the city.

Emery carries every ward. The official returns from five wards are as follows:

Total 3,213

The Council ticket in the Second Ward goes for Emery.

Third Ward elects Emery candidates as follows: Alderman, A. R. Shepherd. Councilmen, George Wilner, W. H. Pope, R. C. Lewis.

Fourth Ward elects Emery men as follows: Alderman, W. W. Moore, long term; W. H. Crossman, short term. Councilmen, S. Robertson, Benj. McCoy and John O'Donoghue.

Fifth Ward elects Emery candidates as follows: George F. Gulick. Councilmen, C. H. Holdep, George Bassett, Thomas Grant.

Sixth Ward elects Emery ticket, as follows: Alderman, D. McCathrap. Councilmen, G. M. Barton, F. D. Gaines, B. F. Palmer.

In the Seventh Ward there were three tickets in the field, and it is very much divided. The returns will hardly get in in time to telegraph to night.

The First Ward is conceded to Emery by a small majority. The ward ticket is very much mixed, but it is believed the Emery men are elected.

Dick Smith, a notorious colored rough and inhabitant of "Hooker's Division," in the Second Ward, is reported to have been shot last night by another colored man. The cause of the shooting has not yet transpired.

The majority for Emery for Mayor is 3,177.

The Seventh Ward gives 72 majority for Emery and elects the Alderman on the Emery ticket.

The first ward goes for Emery by 58 majority. Emery candidates all elected.
